Day 0: My intentions

Hello world! This is my first run at writing a devlog. Exciting  ๐Ÿ˜

I'm attempting to remake an old Gameboy game called Qix using Pico-8. Why? For fun!  ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

Whilst I'm currently on lockdown in my house (like most of the world right now), I figured I could do something I've always wanted to do: (re)make a video game. I've been playing a bunch of Gameboy games recently in an effort to retreat to my childhood - a time when in some ways I was a lot happier. Of all the games I've played so far, Qix stands out.

Part of Qix's charm lies in the fact that it's difficult to describe to someone who hasn't played it. It doesn't really have a genre, although I like the description of it as "the territorial imperative in game form". In the game you have a marker. You use the marker to draw out rectangles on the screen. If you can cover a certain % of the screen in rectangles, without being hit by the titular Qix, you win. That's pretty much it.

And that's why I've chosen to remake Qix: it's simplicity. Simple gameplay. Simple graphics. Simple sound. But at the same time, it's really fun, and strangely addictive.

I'm also signing-up to #100DaysOfCode to keep me working on the game regularly until I finish it. Short daily updates via my Twitter, important milestone updates here.

Wish me luck  ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ
